David Watson is a conceptual and minimalist artist currently residing and working in Greenock, Scotland. Born and raised in rural England, he spent his formative years roaming the Northamptonshire countryside with his three brothers before being sent away to be educated at boarding school near Oxford. Aged 17 David left the farm, moving to Edinburgh to serve as apprentice to cabinetmaker Michael Hart a hard-bitten perfectionist instilling in David a deep understanding of traditional wood working and a sharp eye for detail. Finding solace in the north David stayed in Scotland and over the proceeding twenty years has worked his way west gathering knowledge, skills and a passion for form and precision which have become hallmarks of his artistic practice today

Artist statement

In my work, I am just trying to find a moments piece in a world where there seems to be none. I focus on the reductive, honing in on the essence of form and structure. My Aim is to distil complex ideas into simple, coherent expressions. Each piece reflects a deep attention to detail, with every line, shape, and texture serving a purpose. The work is often conceptual, engaging with ideas of space, time, and materiality while maintaining a direct, almost meditative simplicity.
